Tricky Chaz Magic Show came to the library October 29th. Many people young and not so young
enjoyed the wonderful live performance. Everyone enjoyed the magic tricks, juggling, unicycle, and
balloon art made by Tricky Chaz, (Charles Watson). Charles was given the honor of drawing the
winning ticket for our quilt raffle. The quilt was won by Robin Loudermilk.
We highly recommend Tricky Chaz and his Magic Show.

This group of people was stranded at the Rupert Public Library during the historic floods that occurred throughout Greenbrier County recently. They rode out the floods until they could be rescued by the National Guard.

The Rupert Public Library had just started their summer reading program at 1 pm on the day of the flood. The library director noticed that rain water was pouring under the door to the utility room. She tried to contain the flooding water while the reading program was being held. Thankfully, the water was diverted to the floor drain after a few hours.
The library staff learned that the road was closed at both ends of Rupert. Two families attending the reading program were stranded at the library. Soon, stranded tourists and employees that had barely made it out of Rainelle started coming into the library.
Eleven students from James Madison University and George Mason University in Virginia had been white-water rafting in Fayette County. They camped out in the library and slept in their sleeping bags.
The power and telephone service never turned off. The students were able to use our public computers, read books, played cards, and told stories.
A couple visiting Greenbrier County from California were welcomed to stay. The man was here searching for the Rupert High School, where his father graduated in 1950, and the town of Cornstalk, where his father was born. As it turned out, one of the stranded residents was related to him, and able to give a history of the family. The library director found a school yearbook from 1948 in the library yearbook collection, that had a picture of his father in the 10th grade.
One man stranded was working in Charleston that day, and of all days, decided to take the scenic route home to Waynesboro, VA.
One woman employed by the Rainelle Medical Center was stranded as well. She said she was one of the last people to get out of town.
A family of five, traveling from Kentucky to Williamsburg, VA were so glad that the library was there to give them a place to relax. The library's doors never closed during the three days. People came in who needed to use the library's facilities or just rest. Children had toys to play with and movies to watch.
Thankfully, the group was able to walk to Rupert to find food and necessities. The Mexican restaurant was open and had the Weather Channel videos of the flood in Greenbrier County. The Handy Place brought the group free pizzas, and the Dollar General had everything else they needed.
On Friday evening the National Guard took six of the local stranded people out to where relatives could pick them up. The rest of the people decided to drive an alternate route Friday evening to get home. The library director, her husband, and their dog, Susie, stayed until the road opened on Saturday midday.
"We are so glad we could offer a little comfort to a few stranded people," said Carol McClung of the Rupert Public Library.
Local artist, Randy Windon, took home three awards for his acrylic painting on wood titled "Double Trouble" at the Rupert Public Library Art Show held April 28th - 30th. Randy received the blue ribbon, best in show, and the peoples choice award.
The artist told the people attending the library art show reception that he has only been painting for fifteen months. Library Director, Carol McClung, was pleased to accept two of his paintings as donations to the library.
The art show was a huge success. Artists from the Greenbrier Valley and Grandview exhibited forty paintings in four categories. Blue, red, and white ribbons were given in each category. The library staff and board members were honored to have Robert Tuckwiller judge the art entries.
During the reception held Friday evening the "Goodson Boys" entertained over seventy guests. Levi Skaggs, age 10, was so glad that he was asked to play his banjo with the Goodson Boys. Of course our wonderful board members and friends of the library prepared delicious food for everyone to enjoy. The WV Woodturners Association members Gerald Chandler and Fonzie Fitzwater had a display of their wonderful wooden pieces. Special thanks goes to Karen Lee McClung for planning and assisting the library staff with their first art show. Thank you to everyone who had a part in making this event a success. The Rupert Public Library staff and board members hope to promote ART in their community by sponsoring events such as these in the future.
Gene Worthington of Fayetteville portrayed "Theodore Roosevelt" (1858-1919) at the Library. An excellent portrayal was enjoyed by all attending. West Virginia Humanities Council offers this portrayal through their History Alive!, An invitation to the past program.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00796303277502312311noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-643832773979344315.post-43664797686786820242015-11-27T10:35:00.000-08:002015-11-27T10:35:19.462-08:00

Charles Watson, alias "Tricky Chaz", performed many amazing tricks which puzzled the children as well as adults who attend the show. Chaz involved the children in his show and had each person laughing, which is a good thing. He is an excellent juggler also. After his show he made each child attending a balloon figurine. Our library director received a Mickey Mouse balloon figurine. Refreshments were served and each child received a fun bag to take home provided by the Friends of the Rupert Library. Deloris Lilly (center), brought her guests who were visiting our beautiful state to see our beautiful new library.
Hanna Cole is visiting from Oxford England and Nick Zvegintzon is visiting from Staten Island, New York.
The visitors were given a tour of the new library and they were very glad that we have such a nice facility.
Both Hanna and Nick are contributors of our library. They were quite happy that we had wireless service
so they could keep in touch with family back home and take care of business.
The Rupert Elementary students, (all 180 students), visited the Rupert Public Library to help us celebrate National Library Week 2015. Each student has a library card. These students are such a joy to have visit us. They are so eager to check out books and read. On hand to help the staff were Deloris Lilly, Nancy Cueto, Barbara Hill, and Teresa Andrews. Library Director Carol McClung and Library Aide Novella Perkins were handling the circulation desk. It was a fun day. We look forward to seeing them more often and hearing their stories about the books they read.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00796303277502312311noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-643832773979344315.post-63747973041010302912015-04-01T11:09:00.000-07:002015-04-01T11:09:17.422-07:00Easter Egg HuntOur first annual Easter Egg Hunt was held Saturday, March 28th inside the library.
